PhD History Research Fellow in Statistics

Position as PhD Research fellow (Stipendiat SKO 1017) available at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo

The Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The department has three sections: Mathematics, Mechanics, and Statistics and Insurance Mathematics. The position is affiliated with the Section for Statistics and Insurance Mathematics, which currently has 11 full-time academic positions, 3 adjunct positions, and 7 PhD students. The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % teaching duties. Starting date no later than 01.10.2011.

Job description:

Much of the research at the Section for Statistics and Insurance Mathematics is organized in the research group for Statistics and Biostatistics. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the group as one of the top-tier research groups at the faculty. The research of the group focuses on methodological and applied problems in statistics; in particular many research projects originate in the use of statistics in biology, medicine, and technological and economic risk assessments.

The research group for Statistics and Biostatistics is an active part of Statistics for Innovation (http://projects.nr.no/sfi/), which is a centre for research based innovation designated by the Norwegian Research Council with the Norwegian Computing Center as host institution. The aim of Statistics for Innovation is to develop core statistical methodologies, strategically necessary to achieve innovation goals in the four key sectors: petroleum, finance, marine, and health.

The doctoral fellow will be a member of the research group for Statistics and Biostatistics and, once appointed, a project plan will be worked out in accordance with the activities of the research group and the themes of Statistics for Innovation.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in statistics (or equivalent qualifications), or document that they will complete their Master's degree in the spring semester 2011.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. A good command of English is required.

The doctoral fellow will have 25 % teaching duties. This will involve exercise classes for bachelor courses in statistics and probability, marking of compulsory assignments, and the like. Teaching at the bachelor level is carried out in Norwegian. It is therefore a requirement that the applicant has full command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (Danish or Swedish).

Salary:

Pay grade: 48 - 56 (NOK 383 700 – 440 500 per year)
